MiMi's Monster Cookies

     I am surprised it has taken me this long to get around to posting our family favorite recipe for monster cookies on the blog.  We have had them a number of times in the past year, I've even taken pictures of a few.  I think the problem is that MiMi is normally in charge of making them instead of me, so for whatever reason they haven't been posted yet.  Whatever the reason, it is high time we get to them.  Better late than never I suppose!

Donna's Famous Cheesecake

This cheesecake only takes a handful of ingredients, but results in a smooth and creamy dessert every time. It's so good my sister requested it for her wedding cake!

   I love cheesecake! My aunt Donna spoils me (and she makes a good cheesecake!)  She makes original cheesecakes, chocolate cheesecakes, round cheesecakes, square cheesecakes and they are all yummy!  So of course I had to make her cheesecake recipe very early in this blog's life.  It was delicious, of course!  The best part is the recipe is easy and I usually don't have any problems with it cracking.

Top 10 Posts of 2016

       I hope you all had a great Christmas, if you celebrate.  We certainly did.  It is always a bit of a letdown though when it's over.  There is so much preparation, decoration and buildup and then it's just over!   Of course there isn't a square inch free on our living room floor right now.  All of the construction vehicles and tools have taken over!  That's alright though, we have one very happy little guy and there will be plenty of time to sort through it all later.  You know, after my long winter's nap ;-)

Knock Your Socks Off Cinnamon Buns

    It's Cake Slice Bakers time again!  For those of you who don't remember, we are baking from Maida Heatter's Cakes this year.  Each month Laura picks four recipes and we choose one of them to bake.  There were some really fun sounding recipes this month, I would have loved to bake them all.  I ultimately chose these cinnamon buns though because I did not have the time or ingredients it would take to bake some of the others.  I hope some of the other bakers went for it though, because I would love to see their pictures.  You will have to scroll down to see if they did.  Fingers crossed!!

Brownie Batter Puppy Chow

That childhood favorite snack of yours just got an upgrade! Whether you call it puppy chow, muddy buddies or just plain good, you have to try this brownie batter version!

     Puppy Chow is one of those childhood favorites that you just have to make every once in a while.  Crunchy, chocolaty, peanut buttery goodness that brings you right back to those carefree days.  It made an appearance at all of our sleepovers, movie nights.  It is still a must have for holidays, game nights or a special treat on a movie night.

Gingerbread Cakes

      It's time for another cake slice cake!!  As usual, all four choices look great.  But it is December and there is a gingerbread cake in the mix, so I just had to go that way.  Other than gingerbread cookies, I really hadn't make much gingerbread before joining the group last year.  I believe this is now my third version in a little over a year.  It is amazing how many different version there are and how different the flavor profile of each is.

Apple Stuffed Pork Loin

    MiMi normally hosts whoever is available for dinner on Saturday nights.  She likes to get the kids together a cook a big meal.  If we don't all show up, poor dad is stuck eating the leftovers all week long! I had been wanting to make some risotto for a while now.  But if I am going to put that kind of effort into the side dish, the meat might as well be a little special as well.  A nice pork roast scented with rosemary sounded good.  Why not do some apples as well.  Heck, let's shove it all inside the pork and add a little balsalmic just to round it out.  Why not?!   So, I offered to host family dinner here tonight.  If I am going to cook a hunk of pork and a big pot of risotto, I might as well share!

Perfectly Chewy Peanut Butter Blossoms

A chewier version of the classic blossom cookie. A soft peanut butter cookie hugs a chocolate candy for a piece of holiday heaven! It just wouldn't be Christmas without them! 

      I know, I know.  The 12 Days of Cookies is over.  It sure was fun though, wasn't it?  And I just couldn't help myself.... I've got cookie fever.  So, I thought I should go for the baker's dozen.  You see, yesterday was our friend Sam's birthday.  I had to make him a batch of kolacky, they are his annual birthday request.  While the oven was on and the flour and sugar were in the air, it seemed like we might as well make his other most requested cookie too.  I mean, 'tis the season!

Cinnamon Bun Cookies with Cream Cheese Glaze

     I think these are our new official shower cookies.  I have made them for two showers now.  We threw a Bun in the Oven Shower for my cousin Cori that had to have some cinnamon bun cookies.  They got such rave review there that I knew I had to make a batch for my sister's Bridal Shower Brunch as well.  There were no complaints that they were served again by those who attended both. ;-)

Chocolate Covered Cherry Snowballs

These festive cookies feature a dark chocolate snowball cookie dough wrapped around a maraschino cherry for a fun Christmas cookie unlike any other! They aren't too sweet and just the right size for a couple bites and a smile! 

  Ho ho ho! It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!  Is it just me or is time flying?  I could really use one nice clear day to catch up... but then I'd probably want one more.  So, we'll just have to make due with the hours that we have.  At least I have plenty of cookies to keep me going through the season!  A month long sugar high?  It seems like there are worse things! ;-)

Kolacky - A Tribute to Aunt Bun

It wouldn't be Christmas without some homemade Kolacky.  They are a tradition in my husband's family and one that I am glad to keep going. They are a delicious cookie that will be the star of your holiday tray!

    I never had the pleasure of meeting Matt's Godmother, Aunt Bun.  From what I hear, we would have gotten along famously.  We have a lot in common after-all.  We are both the oldest of six children, we both like to entertain and love to cook.  If her children are any indication, she was a fun loving, family centered, wonderful woman.

Welcome Home Chocolate Chip Cookies

        Those of you who follow along regularly probably remember that things got a little nuts here in October.  We had a chili cook-off planned and invites had been sent almost two full months in advance so people could work out their prize winning recipes. My sister, who was newly engaged (like the end of September newly) decided to go ahead and get married in December.  So there was a shower to plan and wedding details to work out.  I turned in my resignation at the lab I had worked in for over 10 years and started a new job.  And my parents bought the farmstead and moved. All in October.  Since then it has been a whirlwind of showers, weddings, moving, remodels, holidays, going out of town for training, and baking up a storm for all of the above.  Things have been are crazy! And fun! And a little bit crazy!

Melting Moments

     Hasn't 12 days of Cookies been fun so far?  There are so many great varieties and inspiration from all around the world.  I don't know about you, but I have found plenty of recipes to add to my must make list.  If only the holiday baking season were a bit longer and there were a few more hours in the day, I could have the best cookie trays in all of the land filled with a few of each of these marvelous cookies.  I suppose there is always next year!

Chocolate Covered Cherry Cookies


   I just love Christmas cookies!  I love making them and I love eating them.  There are certain cookies we have to have every year.  Of course you need sugar cookies.  Then there are the fudge dipped crescents.  We have to have the chocolate dipped Ritz crackers and peanut butter, chocolate covered pretzels and buckeyes just to name a few.  We only make most of them at this time of the year, so it is something to look forward to.

Soft and Spicy Molasses Cookies

These molasses cookies are warm, sweet and spicy. They are also soft and chewy. They are sue to be a hit on your holiday cookie tray!

      It is funny that even though I come from a very German family on my dad's side, gingerbread wasn't really a holiday staple.  We always had sugar cookies, and crescent cookies, there was always peanut brittle and a variety of other cookies and candies.  But we never really got into the molasses and spiced cookies.  My husband's German family, however got a bit more into gingerbread.  His uncle Doug and family make and send gingerbread men from Washington state each year.  It is the highlight of his grandma's Christmas season, I think.  She gets the lot of gingerbread men and picks out a couple for each of the family members.  But I think Matt's dad takes the cake on gingerbread loving.

Clint's Favorite Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies #ChristmasCookies

     To be honest, before this batch I hadn't had these cookies in years.  But there was an era in my family where these were an absolute staple.  My brother, Clint, was one of those kids who was in high school when September 11th happened.  He and a bunch of his friends instantly new as soon as they graduated they would join the services, and join they did.  It was one of those moments that made you proud and scared at the same time.

German Gingerbread Cookies

Gingerbread men are a Christmas must have! These one have a nice buttery cookie base and all of the spices are likely to already be in your spice cabinet. They will make converts of those who don't think they like these spicy little fellas! 

     Let me tell you the story about how two paths converged to make these cookies.  First, when I was searching for cookie cutters to make the cinnamon brown sugar cookies for Ro's baby shower I found a goat cookie cutter in MiMi's cutters.  My father-in-law loves gingerbread cookies and he has recently become a goat farmer, so I just knew I had to make him gingerbread goats!

Great-Grandma's Egg noodles

These homemade egg noodles are pure comfort food.  My great-grandma made them, then my maw-maw, my mom and now little dude! They are a must have around thanksgiving, but we also make chicken and noodles at least a time or two throughout the year!

    Noodles were a staple at my mom's Thanksgiving dinners growing up.  Turkey, stuffing and Thanksgiving noodles were the must haves.  Paw-Paw grew up eating these noodles.  When the hoosier moved to Illinois, the noodles had to come too. My Great-Grandma McCallum taught my Maw-Maw to make them after she and Paw-Paw got married.  The Buchsbaums took to them quickly!  Mom says Thanksgiving was always a big to-do.  The silver had to be polished, the china and crystal came out.  Thanksgiving morning all the grandkids knew what their job was.  Noodle making!  They had to be spread throughout the kitchen to dry.

Sweet Heat Cranberry Spread #CranberryWeek

      It's holiday party season!  And do you know what that means?  Snacks!  Whether it is a starter while the turkey is roasting on Thanksgiving or something to nosh on during the Christmas parties ahead, this cranberry spread will be a nice change to the standard fare.  It has a really fresh flavor from the herbs and lime juice and just enough spice from the jalapeno to make it interesting.  I don't think it would be too hot to upset anyone's pallet.

They are also a quick and easy way to serve guests.  So I made a bunch for my sister's bridal shower brunch.  We love to have some in the freezer anyway, then we are about 20 seconds away from a breakfast Jax loves.  The best part is these muffins are pretty darn healthy, so you don't have to feel bad about it.

Maple Syrup and Pecan Layer Cake

      Hip, hip, hooray!!  It is finally time to reveal the new Cake Slice Bakers book!!   If you don't know, I am a part of a really fun group that picks a new cake themed cook book each year and bakes from it for a monthly post.  Anabel, our fearless leader picks 4 cakes each month and we all bake one of the 4.  We keep it a secret until we reveal it on our blogs on the 20th.  Each fall the group picks a new book and we reveal what the new book is in our November post along with our first bake from the group.  Slowly but surely, the whole group started getting excited about one book over the course of the last year.  By the time fall came when we would have normally voted, most of us already had the book and were saving it just in case it was chosen.  As each member purchased it, they would be amazed by the beautiful pictures and couldn't help but to share the excitement with the group.  That would inevitably encourage somebody else to by it and the cycle continued until most of us had it.  So this year, we didn't vote.  It seemed like this book was destined to be it.   So without further ado, I will introduce you to our new book.

Spiced Peach Preserves

      I think I might be a bit jam, preserve and spread obsessed lately!  This is actually my third peach jam version on the blog so far and that doesn't include the vanilla peach sauce!  Who would have thought?  I love making peach jam, it is so easy.  All it takes is a little bit of acid and the natural pectin already in the peaches.  You just need to give it enough time to do it's magic.  You can go from fresh or frozen peaches to jam in less than a half hour.

Toasted Maple Cinnamon Granola

   Jax loves yogurt.  He loves smoothies, cups of yogurt and especially fruit and yogurt parfaits.  He thinks it is fun to dump some granola on top and crunch on the little bits of sweet goodness.  But granola can be expensive, and who knows what they put in it?  So I never keep it on hand.  I do always have oatmeal though.  I also always have some form of sugar and oil.  So, I am always just a bit of time and hardly any effort away from granola.  There are many variations you can make, but this is our favorite so far!

     My middle sister is getting married!  Now if that doesn't make me feel a bit old.  So the baby sister and I thought it would be fun to throw her a shower.   Kristie (the middle one) is a country girl at heart.  She is also not interested in planning a big wedding.  So we thought a small and casual country chic type shower would be the perfect way to go.

French Maple Buttercream

This Maple Buttercream is the best ever! It's not too sweet and has just enough maple. It is cream, smooth and buttery in the best kind of way. You have to try it! 

     Ummm, you guys.  I have a new favorite frosting.  I mean really, this frosting is the smoothest, creamiest, yummiest, rich maply goodiest frosting I've ever had.  I'll be sharing a great recipe to share it on a bit later, and I can't wait.  I would tell you that you should go ahead and make a batch for practice, but this seems like it needs something extra special to go with.  So go ahead and give it a try if you want, but prepare to be hooked.

Chili Cook-Off - For All of the Pride and Your Place on the Plaque

     By now I am sure you know how much we enjoy getting our friends and family together.  What we enjoy even more is a good competition.  We happen to hang with a competitive bunch, so it makes for lots of fun witty banter (aka smack talk!) Ever since The Big Poultry Grill-Off of 2016 we just knew we had to have a chili cook-off.  We sent out the evite all the way back on Labor Day so we would be on everyone's calendar and get them thinking.  Good thing we did, because this fall filled up quick and we would have had a hard time getting it in if we didn't commit early! Within a couple of days, people were thinking chili.  Everyone was tossing around ideas and touting their chilies as the best.

MiMi's Birthday Cake (French Butter Cake with Fudge Icing)

     I've been on a roll with recipes from my great-grandma Peggy.  First there was her German Chocolate Cake with Broiled Coconut Frosting that was out of this world good.  I mean broiled frosting!!  You have to check it out if you haven't already.  Then there was her Apple Crisp.  I mean really, it is hard to go wrong with an apple crisp, especially this time of year.  The funny thing this cake was the one I made first out of the three of them. This is MiMi's favorite birthday cake.  The one from her grandma's recipe that was made for her as a little girl.  The one she remembers, enjoys and still wants to have to this very day.  So, of course I had to make her one for her birthday at the beginning of the month.  I have gone back and forth a hundred times as to whether or not to share it.  But I have decided to go ahead and give you the goods.

This simple apple crisp recipe comes straight from my great-grandma, so you know it has to be good! Celebrate fall with a easy treat! 

      I know #appleweek is over, but I just couldn't help but to make one more apple dish to share with you this fall.  I actually got this recipe from MiMi during apple week, but it was too late to get it added.  So, I am sharing it with you now.  This recipe comes from my great-grandma Peggy via my Maw-Maw and then through MiMi.  Maw-Maw (my maternal grandmother) has been going through her recipes and passing some along to MiMi (my mom).  Of course, MiMi is passing them to me too.  You may remember that my great-grandma Peggy is also the one who gave us the German Chocolate Cake with Broiled Coconut Frosting that was met with such rave reviews.  Yeah... so you know it is going to be good!

Turkey Tamale Pie

This fun dinner has the flavor of tamales in a quick and fun casserole form. It is a perfectly flavorful weeknight dinner that is sure to be a hit!

     I have some news that I haven't told you yet... I got a new job!  Of course a new job means lots to learn and a different schedule.  I will be spending a lot less time on the interstate, which is a relief.  However everything feels a little extra hectic right now.

      Full disclosure... it's not just the job, there's also an upcoming move for my parents which involves a big remodel my husband is spearheading, we're hosting a chili cookoff, there's a wedding (and shower etc.) for my little sister, and a little dude that lives in my house that is so superdy duper excited about all of the upcoming holidays.  The last thing I want to do is shortchange him on something he is so looking forward to while we are in the most magical years.

Pizza Tuscana #SundaySupper

      It's pizza day!  It's pizza day!  The Sunday Supper tastemakers are celebrating pizza today and I just had to join in.  The problem with sharing pizza recipes is I always just throw whatever I have on there.  There is not measuring, just adding a bit of this and a bit of that.  I love the traditional combinations, we tend to go with ham, green peppers and mushrooms a lot  We also love the different, BBQ, white, bacon and eggs, and of course buffalo chicken.

Whole Wheat Banana Bread

      It is the end of the Cake Slice Year.  So this  is the last bake from Maida Heatter's Cakes.  I say that with really mixed feelings.  I have really enjoyed almost every single thing I've made from the book.  I have really enjoyed seeing what everyone else made as well.  As much as I love a cookbook with pictures, I have enjoyed the creativity not having something to model you cake after has given us all.  But I am REALLLLLLLLLLY looking forward to the new book.  I am actually baking my first cake from it as I am typing this. How's that for multi-tasking?! I can't wait to tell you all about it, but I am not allowed to reveal the book until next month.  So hold on to your seats!

Pumpkin Cheesecake Cream Puffs #PumpkinWeek

       Cream puffs have been on my mind for a while now.  They have come up in various conversations and I just knew I needed to make a batch sooner rather than later.  The problem is what to fill them with?  There are so many options; delicious sweet filling, beautiful savory fillings.  I mean the possibilities go on forever!  Plus they seem like they should be made for an event of some sort, not just because it's cloudy and I feel like it.

Family Favorite Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread #PumpkinWeek

      Hasn't pumpkin week been delicious so far?  Have you had a chance to click around and check out some of the recipes?  I just love the change of season (unless that change is into winter!)  I love how after wanting to hibernate for months, all of the sudden things get warm and green in the spring.  I love all of the fresh fruits and veggies.  But by the time mid-September comes around there is always a part of me that is ready to move on.  By then the novelty of shorts has left and the feeling of taking a steam bath every time you open the door has worn on your last nerve.  Those tomatoes that we were anxiously awaiting in the first weeks of July have turned into more of a chore than a treasure.  That's when it happens.
