Vanilla Ice Cream - The Grand Finale of MiMi's Cook the Book Dinner

    For the grand finale of our Christy Jordan's Southern Plate meal I made homemade ice cream.  Christy says her grandmama and granddaddy made homemade ice cream when their strawberries started coming in, and there was nothing like it.  That's as far as I had to read before I knew that I had to try this recipe.  It calls for six pasteurized eggs. I get eggs from my hens and don't worry about eating them raw.  I went online and found that there are recipes that you can pasteurize eggs your self if you cannot find pasteurized eggs at the store.  I tried one of them and liked the way it works.  This is a quick and easy recipe for a very tasty vanilla ice cream. 


Vanilla Ice Cream
makes 2 quarts


6 pasteurized eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 pint whipping cream
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
Whole milk

  1. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar well with a wire whisk.  Add the whipping cream, condensed milk and vanilla.  Stir well to blend.
  2. Pour into a 2 quart ice cream freezer and add milk up to the fill line.  Freeze according to the directions on your ice cream freezer and enjoy!
Note: 2 cups of fresh sweetened fruit may be added before freezing.


  1. I have yet to try an ice cream recipe made with condensed milk. I'm thinking it's time experiment! I love homemade vanilla ice cream, so much better than store-bought!

    1. There is nothing better than homemade vanilla ice cream. We have tried quite a few and have gotten quite picky (everyone's a critic!) and this one made the grade!

    1. It's funny how it's feast or famine with those chickens and their eggs! This is a perfect way to use some up!

  3. I love a great basic recipe, one that can be altered or added to, and this one is just that! Toss in fruit or oreos or brownies and you can have any kind of ice cream you want! LOVE IT!
