The Big Poultry Grill-Off 2016

We decided it was way past time to have a new cooking competition.  The pecan pie throw down was so much fun and we needed a new challenge.  We batted around a bunch of ideas and there are going to be some fun cook-offs in the future.  We decided a great seasonal competition would be one on the grill.  A poultry grill-off was scheduled and invites were sent out.  There was to be a ring of fire.  Anything that had feathers was fair game as the main ingredient.  Everyone started sharpening their spatulas and warming up the grills.

We had 5 cooks grilling,.  I loved seeing them actually assemble into the ring of fire.  All those grills, prep tables, coolers and lawn chairs made the competition seem real!  The judging sheets were printed and everything was ready to go.  We had the best time watching the grill masters grill.  It was interesting to see what each person made.  It was also fun to watch the judges judge.  They'd take a bite and step back and chew and ponder, then grab a bite of the next entry.  Sometimes they'd have to go back and get another try of something to give it the proper consideration.  We could have made a whole meal out of judging the entrees!  In the end I think everyone had a good time.

The votes were tallied and one entry reigned supreme!  My brother K.C. pulled it out with his turkey bacon explosion.  Of course adding bacon to the mix never hurts!  We started a winners board and carved his name in the annals of history.  Before everyone left we were already turning over the ideas of the next competition.  I think we're all working on our secret chili recipes for the fall chili cook-off and a Christmas cookie bake-off was suggested as well.  I better get training, I need my name on that board!

  2. Carlee, What a great idea. I have 3 grill masters in my family + me, and while they are all good - they have such different approaches to grilling it amazes me. Mine would be the fastest, my son second and a tie to slow cooking to the other 2 guys. We should do this when we are all together. I enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing. Are we going to get your brother's recipe?

    Wishes for tasty dishes,
    Linda

    1. It was so much fun, Linda! I hope you do give it a try. I will have to ask him to make it again so I can get better pictures. I was so busy helping to plate and giving judging instructions that I didn't get great pictures of the sliced bacon explosion. I am sure he will oblige though!

    1. We had sooo much fun! We can't wait for the next throw down. I need to decide whether to make the chili everyone has had a million times (but is a sure vote from my husband who LOVES it) or make something fancier, or more exotic... or just add bacon?!

  8. This looks like a blast! Our friends did this on a smaller scale and they did different items. Everything was delish, as they all brought their A game! Sounds like everyone had a great time and no one left hungry!
