Honey Lime Slaw with Cilantro and Sriracha

Normally I am a creamy coleslaw kind of gal.  But this was worth stepping outside of my comfort zone. It is bright and fresh and delicious!  It has a nice blend of sweet and sour, balanced with a little heat.  It has a nice rounded flavor that will knock your socks off.

Watermelon Cake Balls

By now you know I have a sweet tooth and I am a sucker for food that fits a theme.  Of course that means summer parties need summer treats.  These watermelon cake balls fill that need.  They are relatively easy to make and they are cute as can be.  The best part is you can make them a few days ahead of a party, leaving you plenty of time to do everything else as the event rolls around.  Make a set for your next BBQ, surprise your family with fun mini watermelons at your next picnic of be the hit of your next potluck.  There are a treat that will not soon be forgotten!

Lots of Candy Monster Cookie Bars, Mondays With MiMi

Our family really enjoys Monster Cookies.  I talked about this when I shared my homemade Monster Cookie Ice cream Recipe.  I made this monster cookie bars to go with the ice cream.  For some reason it just seemed to me that if we were going to have monster cookie ice cream we should have monster cookies. Since monster cookies make such a big batch I decided to make these bars to treat the small dinner party I was having.  They make a reasonable amount and of dessert and served as a nice base for the ice cream.  I just now thought about how nice this dessert would be layered as follows: cookie bars, ice cream and a small serving of hot fudge topped with small candy bar pieces to tie it all together. (So much for being reasonable.)  Too late to serve that to my guests but feel free to wow yours with my special dessert idea!
These are great served warm out of the oven too.

Red, White and Blueberry Sourdough Waffles

Are you looking for new things to do with your sourdough starter? These blueberry waffles are just the thing! Serve with strawberries and maple whipped cream for a patriotic treat or just enjoy with some syrup for a weekend breakfast or brunch delight!

I LOVE waffles!  I know, it probably isn't a huge surprise based on how big my sweet tooth is.  But belgian waffles hold a special place in my heart.  As a kid, we were members of the country club just up the road from us.  We would all pile in the golf cart and head up there to spend the day in the pool.  Most of the time it was just for fun, but there were practices for the swim team mixed in.  We also took some tennis lessons and golf lessons, all skills which are now completely lost!  But we always had a good time.  But my favorite part about the country club was Sunday brunch.

Fun Food Ideas for the Fourth of July!

It's almost the 4th of July and red, white and blue are popping up everywhere!  So a couple of my friends and I got together to make you some treats.  By now you know I love party food and holiday food is the ultimate party food!  The Fourth of July is not exception and comes with its own brand of excellent food. I always think of BBQs and of course red, white and blue treats.  I love them all, but especially those that get their color from all of the ripe berries that are so good this time of year.

The Big Poultry Grill-Off 2016

We decided it was way past time to have a new cooking competition.  The pecan pie throw down was so much fun and we needed a new challenge.  We batted around a bunch of ideas and there are going to be some fun cook-offs in the future.  We decided a great seasonal competition would be one on the grill.  A poultry grill-off was scheduled and invites were sent out.  There was to be a ring of fire.  Anything that had feathers was fair game as the main ingredient.  Everyone started sharpening their spatulas and warming up the grills.

Red White and Blue Sangria

It's that time of year when sitting on the deck and having a nice long relaxing chat seems like the thing to do.  Of course I have a three year old, so sitting still is pretty much not in the picture.  And having a whole conversation outside of work hours hasn't happened in well.... three years!  Of course I wouldn't change it for anything, but it does make the nice drink and catching up with friends sound that much more intriguing.

Monster Cookie Ice Cream - Mondays with MiMi (a day late!)

Monster cookies are definitely a favorite for our family.  I sued to make them when Kristie, our middle daughter, would come home from college.  Since they make such a big batch I decided to send some of them with her to work. (She always worked when she was home). Her coworkers started requesting them so we tried to make them whenever we could.  So, when we hosted her boyfriend and his parents for dinner recently I decided to try to make monster cookie dough ice cream.  It was the perfect ending to a meal that included Maw-Maw's Hamburger Surprises.

Sand Torte

This cake has a very fine, sand-like crumb.  I think you may find the list of ingredients surprising too.  It is a classic cake refreshed!

It's Cake Slice Day again!  As you know by now, we are baking our way thought Maida Heatter's Cakes and I have been having the best time doing it.  So far they have almost all been winners, with only one mediocre bake that was mostly due to my own inattention to details and not necessarily the recipe.  Though I definitely learned my lesson to start checking things early and not take baking times for granted!

It is always really hard for me to choose what to bake each month.  I am glad I am only given four choices each time, or I would never be able to narrow it down.  Even with just the four options, I still hem and haw.  I pick and change my mind.  It is terrible because they all sound so good.

Homemade Banana Pudding

As I sit here typing this, I have some blackberry cobbler bars that are overflowing in the oven.  It smells like smoke and it is too late to do much about it other than silently curse myself and wait for the oven to cool and clean up the mess.
I am kicking myself for getting a little too liberal with my changes to the recipe.  But even more so, I am kicking myself for adding those two extra cups of berries at the end.  Because they were so fresh and pretty straight off the bush.  Because the bars just looked like they needed a few more.  Because I just couldn't help myself and it seemed like the right thing to do.

The pan had another story to tell.

Banana pudding will never do that to you, my friends.

Banana pudding is the safe hug I need after such a disaster!

Roasted Radishes with Wilted Radish Greens

I never thought I liked radishes.  But then, I had only ever had the ones from the store.  Fresh radishes, right from the garden are a completely different thing altogether.  But even if you don't like fresh spring radishes, you have to give these a try.  Roasted they are yet a completely different version of themselves.  The peppery bite almost disappears and their sweetness  shines through.

Ruth's Ding Dong Cake

A great injustice has been done and I do apologize!  Three savory recipes in a row?! From me - the queen of sweets?!  Don't worry, I will make up for it!  (I know, there are much bigger problems in the world.  I just makes my heart hurt to think about them, so I think of chocolate instead.) This ding-dong cake will surely be enough for you to forgive me right?  Chocolate cake, fluffy vanilla filling and a decadent chocolate top.  It is one of your favorite childhood snack cakes all grown up!

The Ultimate BLT Pasta Salad

This pasta salad is full of the bacon, lettuce and tomato flavors that are part of that classic sandwich combination but it also has some extras to take it to the next level. Serve it at your next BBQ, potluck or picnic and enjoy the rave reviews!

Happy Sunday!  As normal, we have been having a fun weekend full of running around outside and playing at the park.  I really should use the weekend cleaning up the house and getting things done, but there was a little guy who wanted to go visit the rolly slide, so we did that instead!  This week's theme for Sunday Supper is Dad's Favorite Recipes and it is being hosted by The Chef Next Door.    You would think that would be an easy theme to pick a recipe.  Just imagine your dad's favorite recipe and make it.  The problem is my dad likes everything.  He really isn't picky at all and seems to enjoy most anything you could put in front of him.

Old Fashioned Maple Baked Beans and 16 Great Recipes for Grilling and BBQs

It is finally grilling season again!  For whatever reason, when I think of grilled meat baked beans are one of the sides that come to mind.  Are you making burgers?  You'll need some baked beans.  Is pulled pork on your menu?  Baked beans!  Grilling chicken?  Make baked beans!  My grandma recently gave me my great-grandma's bean pot and I couldn't wait to use it.  I love using things that generations of my family have used, there is just so much history and love in the pot that it has to make the food that much better.

Honey Sesame Chicken in the Slow Cooker

I have been wanting to make a slow cooker version of honey chicken for a while now.  The problem is every recipe I saw involved browning bites of chicken and then putting them in the slow cooker for 3 hours.  That may work in some situations, but when your work day is 8 hours long a 3 hour cook time isn't exactly convenient.

Sourdough Banana Bread Muffins

Sadly, all good things must come to an end.  Maw-Maw and Paw-Paw are headed home.  It's smart really, they are leaving right before we get temperatures in the 90s.  For those of you who aren't familiar with our particular brand of heat in central Illinois, that is 90 some odd degrees with about a million percent humidity.  We'll need machetes to cut through it.  But such is life around here.  We have the joy of biting cold in the winter and sweltering heat during the summer with about a day of spring and fall in between.  I really do love it here for the most part, but a good solid month of high sixties and low seventies a couple of times a year would be nice!

Cream Cheese Whipped Cream

Cream cheese and whipped cream combine for the best of both worlds.  It is fluffy and light like whipped cream with just a bit of that cream cheese tang and extra stability. This stuff is amazing!

Good morning!  I hope you weekend has been fabulous.  Ours has been busy, but so much fun.  My Maw-Maw and Paw-Paw are in town visiting, so there has been family gathering after family gathering.  So we are fat, happy and a little bit tired this morning.

Slow Cooker Chicken Parmesan Sandwiches

Whew!  We are making it through the week.  Sometimes short weeks are the longest.  Maybe I am easily spoiled or maybe I am looking forward to the weekend.  It will be another busy one.  My Maw-Maw and Paw-Paw will be in town, so there are plenty of activities planned.  We are also celebrating my littlest sister's birthday.  She has requested a Brownie Cheesecake with Mocha Whipped Cream for her birthday cake.  I am excited to have the chance to make it again.  I think I might make it in a round pan this time and maybe make a bigger size? Because more cheesecake always seems like a good idea!

Corn, Black Bean and Avocado Salad with Lime Dressing

I have come to a few conclusions.  The first: every weekend should have three days!  It is amazing the difference that one extra day makes.  The second: Tuesdays after a Monday off are the strangest.  Is it Monday? Is it Tuesday?  What should I be doing with my life?  What they heck happened on Friday (which seems so long ago now) and what loose ends am I supposed to be tying up?

   Or is that just me?
