Dirt pudding jars are a childhood favorite treat that is sure to become an instant favorite again. Crushed cookies, creamy pudding and cream cheese make such a delicious no bake dessert!
Creamy delicious pudding between layers of chocolate cookie crumbs. Dirt pudding is a favorite for good reason, it is such a fabulous combination.
Put those layers in glass jars to make fun individually sized desserts. That way there is no mess at serving time, just give everyone a jar and a spoon and you’re ready to go!
These dirt pudding jars are always a hit. So much so that my sister wanted them as part of her dessert buffet at her wedding.
We have also served them with little carrot shaped candies on top for Easter parties. Decorate them with gummy worms for a child’s party or garden gathering.
While we love the single serve jars, you can also make this recipe in a 9×13 pan or a trifle bowl. Just sprinkle half of the Oreo crumbs on the bottom of the pan.
Dollop bits of the pudding over top of the crumbs, gently spreading it around to smooth it out. Then distribute the remaining crumbs over the top of the pudding mixture.
Our favorite way to have dirt pudding is as written, with vanilla pudding. However, you can substitute in chocolate pudding for a more dirt like look if you prefer.
It is funny, because it had been years since we had dirt pudding last. Then my sister requested it for her birthday this year.
Then we made single serve jars of dirt pudding for her wedding along with all sorts of other treats. Then I just couldn’t help but to make it again for our Easter party.
I thought it would be fun studded with carrots. I actually made a double batch.
One batch went into a trifle bowl and the other went into jars. That way some were easy grab and go treats, so everyone could get back out to the egg hunt.
But if people wanted just a little scoop (I don’t get it either!), they were able to take as much or as little as they wanted. We didn’t have much left.
I think it is because it has such fond childhood memories for so many. Of course you could go full retro on it and add the gummy worms, but chocolate carrots were a fun change of pace!

I don't see "pudding mix" listed in your list of ingredients. What size box of pudding mix does this recipe call for?

I have to make this the next time my nephew is back in the states! He would have fun with it! Working for a waste/recycling company, we could really get into a discussion about producing less waste! And, it's sooo easy to do once you become aware of what you are bringing home from the stores! And reuse what you can! Like those egg cartons... give them to someone you know who raises chickens :) Easy place to start!

Ha! I'm sure between the two of us we'd have plenty of stories. And we always save those egg cartons in hopes they come back full again ;-)

These are so cute! Perfect for the kiddos. I agree with you about the Earth- how is it political? If there's no place for us to live, no food for us to eat, then all the other issues are completely mute. It's been years for me too since I've had dirt pudding, but I think I'm having a craving now :-)

I agree completely, hopefully one of these days we'll get it straight! I hadn't had it in a while either, but now I'm hooked again!

Hi Carlee, I have missed reading your blog! It doesn't take much for us all to do our bit for the planet, lots of littles make a lot!
I do love the sound of dirt pudding and it's certainly not something I have ever come across before! I'd have to put gummy worms in, just to see the look on peoples faces when they pull one out.

I've missed you too! It really doesn't take much, if we all just make a few small changes it really could make a big difference. We grew up with the gummy worms as decoration which was always fun. My mom used to make something similar with vanilla cookies and served it in a clean sand bucket with a sand shovel too. I need to do that sometime!
