Our Favorite Comfort Food Dinner Ideas

Are you looking for some great new dinner ideas that warm your belly and make you smile? These are some of our favorite comfort food dinner ideas!

Is it still cold where you are? We had a couple of nice days sprinkled in, a teaser of spring weather. Then we got six inches of snow on Easter and more forecast for this Sunday. Not cool, Mother Nature!

So while the calendar may be saying spring is here, the weatherman has another story to tell.  Fresh greens and berries still seem a long way off.

The salad forks are still tucked away waiting for spring to come and stay and we are back to casseroles and soup.  There is nithing like a hot a filling comfort food meal to take the edge off the cold.

I thought I'd take this opportunity to share with you some of our favorite dinners for filling up hungry (and cold!) bellies. What are some of your favorite comfort food dinners?

Comfort Food Dinner Ideas

Nothing says a plate full of comfort like creamy chicken in gravy over mashed potatoes.  It is great over rice, noodles or bread as well, but go with mashed potatoes for the full comfort food treatment! The best part is the chicken is made in the slow cooker, so it is easy and delicious.

It seems the words creamy and chicken scream comfort to me because this creamy chicken pot pie soup definitely does the trick.  It is a fun dinner that will warm you up from the inside out.

They can't all be creamy chicken dinners, so maybe being served over mashed potatoes can be another comfort food theme! This balsamic and rosemary braised pork butt has great flavor and again it could be served with noodles or on a bun, but the mashed potatoes bring it to full comfort food status!

Surprise! This one isn't over mashed potatoes and it doesn't same creamy chicken in the title.  Cheese soup is a definite comfort food winner.  This copycat Kelly's cheese soup is a regional favorite that is sure to become a favorite in your house as well!

Grandma's chicken and broccoli casserole has pasta, cheesy and a bit of a creamy sauce... so you know this one is a comfort food favorite too!  It is great with leftover chicken or turkey, but is worth cooking some for as well! My guys are always happy when this makes an appearance on the table!

So we are learning that cheese and pasta is mean comfort to me as well! And a super creamy and cheesy stove top macaroni and cheese fits the bill to a T! This creamy macaroni and cheese with ham makes a perfect entree.  You could stir in some peas and make it a whole meal in one dish as well!

If you are looking for an Italian twist on your cheese and pasta, MiMi's baked ziti is the thing for you.  It is baked to perfect and is the perfect fill you up and make you smile dinner option.

Sometimes comfort comes in the form of nostalgia.  My grandma makes this SOS frequently and it is full of good memories of her childhood and the fun she had.  We love it too, even if we don't have so many memories wrapped up in it.  The creamy simple goodness just hits the spot sometimes.

Another vintage favorite dinner comes from my Maw-Maw.  She made her scalloped potatoes and pork chops all in the same pan.  That makes for extra flavorful potatoes and tender pork chops, plus fewer dishes to do!

Comfort Food Side Dishes

Of course comfort food can come in the form of side dishes as well.  My great-grandmas made delicious scalloped corn.  The recipe may be simple, but the results are delicious! Creamy risotto is also a comfort food to me.  We love mushroom risotto and fell in love with butternut risotto last fall.  I'd happily take a bowl of either and curl up in yummy bliss.

Back to cheesy pasta goodness,  creamed spinach macaroni and cheese has been a hit with everyone who tried it!  Then there are homemade egg noodles.  Whether they are served as a side at Thanksgiving or loaded with chicken and turkey as the star of the show, my family is sure to gobble them up!

  1. Mmm. Comfort food! We should be out getting our gardens started to keep warm. Since it’s too cold for that, filling our senses and our bellies with comfort food for a few more times will make things better. Then let’s bring on grilling season!
