Swamp crackers are crackers baked with a flavorful coating of ranch, dill and garlic. This cheesy goldfish cracker version is a fun twist on the classic recipe.

They are a perfect salty munchable snack, or add them to a bowl of soup to take it to the next level. Either way you plan to enjoy them, you should make a batch of these swamp fish crackers ASAP.

Snack Attack

Sometimes you just need a savory snack. Something salty with big flavor in a small package.

You know the kind of thing where your hand keeps reaching back into the bowl for a few more as if it didn’t have a choice. These are that thing!

bowl of oil with ranch seasoning mixed in.

Both my mom and mother-in-law make versions of something similar. My mom usually makes seasoned oyster crackers and likes to serve them when she is serving soup.

My mother-in-law makes seasoned Ritz Bitz. She’s been known to bring them as an appetizer/snack for our outdoor parties.

Both always get gobbled up and I wonder why I never think to make them. Then I did!

I was in the mood to make something simple and tasty. Everything that came to mind involved peanut butter and I knew a friend’s kiddo with a peanut allergy would be in attendance.

So I was trying to get off that train of thought.

school of cheddar fish crackers swimming across counter.

My other stipulation was I didn’t want to go to the store. I needed to settle on something using ingredients I already had.

That’s when it struck me. The bags of Goldfish crackers would be perfect coated in ranch.

I decided to amp up the dill and garlic flavor a bit because everyone loves the dilly ranch snack mix so much. Then these tasty little swamp fish emerged.

I don’t know who started calling those crackers swamp crackers, but I kind of love it in reference to these fish. While I might avoid eating a swampy fish regularly, in cracker form they are delicious.

Too delicious, possibly 😉 I will warn you that it is hard to stop munching on them once you get started.

What soups go with swamp crackers?

They are great as a stand alone snack, but I can also envision them floating on a bowl of potato chowder, chicken and black bean soup or cheeseburger soup.  Yum!

For another fun salty snack, try making some Parmesan ranch snack mix. It is loaded with crunchy goodies and savory flavors.

Hi Carlle, what a fun alternative to croutons! We may not get swampy or otherwise fish crackers here, but we do get cheesy and salty crackers.
