Smothered Breakfast Burger


If you are a breakfast food lover, this is the burger for you! It is loaded with flavor and smothered in a creamy bacon gravy. Get your napkins ready, this is going to be good!

     Smothered breakfast burgers may just become your new favorite food.  The super savory and delicious patty nestled on a toasted English muffin and topped with creamy bacon gravy is a thing of beauty. Top it with a fried egg for burger perfection!


     Did you know May is burger month?  I didn't either until recently.  It does make sense though.

    With the weather warming up and Memorial Day around the corner, it is definitely time to dust off those grills! And what better thing to throw on them than a burger?

     Burgers are one of those foods that seem so simple, but when done right can be so darn good. It really is hard to top a really nicely assembled burger.

     It has been quite a while since I posted a burger around here, so I figured it was high time I changed that.  The first hamburger recipe I shared has been a favorite in our family for generations.

     Maw-Maw's hamburger surprises are always a hit. My Maw-Maw was doing stuffed burgers before stuffed burgers were a thing. A trend setter, she is!

      A few years ago, MiMi did a twist on that and made American lava burger surprises. They are a twist on a juicy lucy with one side being pork and the other beef.

   The center is a melted cheese river of goodness. You just have to give them a go!

     MiMi also did a twist on a burger we saw online. The sriracha butter hamburger surprises were an instant hit and we really should make them again soon!

      All of those stuffed burgers are fabulous. Heck a nice burger patty with some melted cheese on a toasted bun is a thing of beauty in itself! But I thought it would be fun to do something a bit different with this burger.

     Enter the one, two, three punch of smothered breakfast goodness! The patty is made from a mix of ground beef and pork sausage.  Toss in a little cheese to make sure it is extra good!

     The cooked burgers are placed on a toasted English muffin and then a spoonful or two of bacon gravy goes on top. You with me still? I hope you are!

     It is quite fabulous just like that. You can totally put the top on and call it a day.

     Or... you could fry up an egg and plop that down on top first. Oh, I hope you do!

Tips for making a great burger:

Start with chilled meat. It's the same principal as making meatballs or other patties. If the fat is cold when it's form and cooked, it will create a more tender and delicious result.  Chill it before forming them and again before cooking them if you can.

I cooked these burgers in a cast iron skillet on the stove.  You could definitely do them on the grill, but I would do indirect heat to avoid flare-ups. These babies produce some grease while they cook.

Burger patties have a tendency to shrink a bit while cooking.  Making a dimple in the center can help them from shrinking up and having a big mound in the center.

Smothered Breakfast Burger

If you are a breakfast food lover, this is the burger for you! It is loaded with flavor and smothered in a creamy bacon gravy. Get your napkins ready, this is going to be good!

ingredients:

Burgers
  • 4 English Muffins
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound pork breakfast sausage
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • 4 Eggs
Bacon Gravy
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

instructions:

How to cook Smothered Breakfast Burger

Bacon Gravy
  1. Cook the bacon until crisp. Drain most of the fat, reserving just a couple of teaspoons in the pan.
  2. Roughly chop the bacon and return it to the skillet. Add the Tablespoon of flour, stirring to coat the bacon. Cook over medium heat for a minute or two to cook the flour taste out.
  3. Stir in the milk and cook until bubbly and thickened. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 
Burgers
  1. Mix together ground beef, pork sausage, and shredded cheese.  Season with salt and pepper. 
  2. Form into 4 patties, forming a slight dimple in the middle with your hands.  
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the burgers to the hot skillet, cooking 4-5 minutes on each side until they are cooked through.
  5. Meanwhile, toast the english muffins and fry the eggs if desired.
  6. Serve each patty on a toasted english muffin. Top with a couple of Tablespoons of bacon gravy and a fried egg if desired.
