Why I Love Cooking and Sharing Recipes With You

     Today I thought it would be fun do something a little different and share my why. Why I enjoy cooking. Why I share it all with you. Why I love frosting.

     Ok, I'm actually not going to cover the last part because the answer should be pretty obvious. (Spoiler alert: it's amazing. End of story. Duh!😉)

      I'll be honest with you, keeping up with this site is a lot of work. There are recipes to try and tweak and try again.

      Then there is the challenge of making that food look appetizing in a photograph. It seems like that should be an easy task, but it's really not. Take a picture of your dinner tonight and you'll see what I mean.

     After all of that there are posts to write. Those long stories and ramblings may be an annoyance to some of you, but they are the whole point for others. Plus there are usually some tips and nuggets of valuable information sprinkled in.

      Besides those stories are what make my site a little different from everyone else's. They give google some information that helps me show up when people search for recipes as well.

      Sometimes those stories and bits of information just flow out of my fingertips. Other times I stare at a blank screen for way too long wondering how the heck I can make talking about another casserole interesting.

     But I love it too. I love making the food. I love sharing the recipes. I love the extended family we have built around this digital dinner table.

     So I thought in the spirit of sharing, I'd tell you a little more about myself and why this journey is so important to me.

I believe in the importance of family meals

     My parents were strong proponents of eating dinner as a family.  I am the oldest of 6 kids, so as you may imagine it would have been expensive to eat out all of the time.

       So my mom made dinner every night.  We were expected to be there as long as there wasn't a game or practice at the same time.

      As soon as I was old enough to help make dinner, I did. It was my favorite way to help out around the house.

      As soon as Little Dude entered the picture, my husband and I made a similar commitment to family dinner in our home. Of course things pop up, but we make a real effort to eat together every night.

      That is when we find out how everyone's day went. We discuss what is coming up on our calendars as well.

      We enjoy each other's company and have a nice meal together. It is one of the highlights of our day.

       I know that it takes some time and effort to follow through and make dinner, but I promise you it is worth it.

     I work full time as well as do everything you see here on this site. My husband is a self employed contractor, so he keeps pretty busy himself.

      Little Dude has school obligations and neighborhood friends that need played with. Being a first grader is a lot of work!

      Despite the busy schedules, we make it work. We do it because it's important to us.

   We do it because it's more economical. We also do it because more often than not we like homemade food better than what we get when we go out.

     All of that to say, you can do it too. Most of what I share here is relatively simple and quick.

      It has to be, or I couldn't do it either. A lot of recipes can even be at least partially prepared ahead of time.

      I get it. You're busy. I'm busy. But that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a nice meal together.

     I am not a trained chef. I don't know any fancy techniques.

      I am a busy mom with a busy family. I just make it a priority to cook and share.

      There is nothing I am doing here that you can't do as well. I might enjoy the process more, but I promise you can make anything I can.

     I think I might be an Italian grandmother who came into her prime a little younger than most. I definitely show my love through food.

Are you not feeling well? Let me make you some food.

It's your birthday? I'd love to bake you a cake!

A new baby? I'll bring you some baked ziti or a chicken pot pie.

You get the point. I also remember those little offhand comments about the food you do and don't like.

    If you make a comment about how good something was, you are likely to see it again. It makes me happy that it makes you happy.

     As much as I would love to, I can't bake you all cupcakes every time something happens in your life. I can't drop off a casserole when I think you need it.

    What I can do is share virtually. I give you the recipe and hopefully a little encouragement too.

     I can't explain to you how good it feels when I know you tried and liked one of my recipes. It's almost like we had that moment together over a delicious plate of food.

This is my creative outlet

I am not an artist. I can't sing. Well, I can... but nobody wants to hear it!

I don't play a musical instrument. When I  tried to learn to knit, I made each stitch so tight that I practically gave myself arthritis trying to knit the second row.

What can I do? I turn random bits of leftovers into a whole new meal.

I see flavor combinations as a challenge to turn them into new frosting recipes.

I take bits and pieces I like from an assortment of recipes and turn them into a whole new recipe.

I feed my family, my friends, my coworkers and sometimes random strangers who happen to be at the right place at the right time.

I've been honored to make desserts for two of my siblings' wedding receptions. Hosted showers, birthday parties and a regular series of cook-offs.

This is my art. This is my outlet. This is where I'm creative and have fun.

Being in the kitchen doesn't have to be a chore. Instead it can be a challenge.

Challenge yourself to turn the ingredients you have into a meal that will make an impression on your family. Challenge yourself to make it a good impression!

It is fun to learn a little about you guys along the way!

I get to share my food, family and life with you every week. Usually at least three times a week.

But it isn't all about me. I have had the great benefit of getting to know some of you along the way.

Through comments, emails, and on social media I get to learn about you a little at a time. I absolutely love when you share what you did (or didn't) love about a recipe.

I also enjoy hearing about your own favorite recipes. Every once in a while they even end up as posts here!

I love it when we share common experiences, whether it's the food or something else. It ties us together no matter how far apart we might live.

So in its small way this site, our community, our friendship is making the world a little smaller, a little nicer and hopefully a bit more tasty!

  4. So nice to read more about you and why you blog what you do! I wish I was a talented cook, my mum is but I never got the skills from her as much as she tried to teach me, haha! I try though and it's nice when the boys eat something different that I try - even if sometimes the final verdict from hubby was that it was nice to try but he never wants it again! it's definitely a creative artform and one I just don't have the ability with!

  5. Great essay! You were actually a competent cook at an early age. Like 2years old! And I like it that you helped Little Dude to cook too! One of the things I didn’t see mentioned above is that you are actually keeping a lot of family history alive in sharing recipes! (Unless my scrolling was faulty)

And, honestly some nights, when I'm just not feeling inspired or have an idea of what to cook, I just pop in to take a look at what you have going on. Even though I may not have the ingredients to make a recipe, you usually inspire a great idea.
