This classic crunchy cereal snack mix is coated with butter and savory seasonings, then baked until crispy and delicious in the oven. Homemade Chex mix is a Christmas time must have in our family, but we love it all year!
This classic Chex mix recipe is perfect. Each piece is coated with savory seasoned goodness, and it is baked to crisp perfection.
There are no little packets of mix to remember, just simple ingredients you are likely to already have in your pantry. It is good for holiday gatherings, parties, road trip snacks, and more.
Chex mix is another one of my family’s Christmas staples. My grandma used to make huge tubs of it for when we were all around.
My mom makes it every year, too. My brother Clint can eat his weight in it.
My brother K.C. says Chex Mix is his favorite Christmas cookie! 😉
I remember getting out the Chex mix pan and making it every year. You coat the goodies in seasonings and butter, then bake it, stirring every so often until it is just right.
So imagine my surprise when all of the chex mix recipes had you “bake” it in the microwave! Not my chex mix!
I had the official chex mix pan out and ready to go. I wasn’t turning to the microwave now. So, I finally found a recipe and made it the way I remembered it. Yum!
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does homemade Chex Mix last?
Make sure to cool your Chex mix completely, then transfer it to airtight containers. It can be stored at room temperature for a couple of weeks. If you have made more than you can eat in a few weeks, you can put some in freezer bags and freeze it for later.
Can I mix and match the ingredients in this Chex mix?
Of course! If you like different crackers, cereal or whatever in your Chex mix have fun playing with the exact items you put in. Or if you don’t like peanuts, or pretzels, or whatever substitute something else. Just keep the ratio of bits to spices about the same and you should be in good shape.

Hi! Not sure if I missed it, but how long will this last in and airtight container? Like if I sealed them in a foodsaver bag? I want to make them in advance to hand out in a week.

You can store it for a couple of weeks, especially if they are sealed. Just make sure the Chex mix is completely cooled before you try to package it. That way there won't be any steam or condensation and it will stay crispy longer. Enjoy!

It’s in the oven! So easy and going to be delicious! I did sub oyster/soup crackers for the wheat Chex’s and mixed nuts for peanuts. Yum!

Do you let this cool in the pan or spread it out on paper towels or parchment paper?

That's a great question. I usually spread it out so it cools more quickly and everything has a chance to get good and crunchy. Once it's completely cool transfer it to airtight containers for storage.
